Vookani is a smartphone app for worksite leaders. It features one-touch updates, automatically generated text messages, and simple green-yellow-red status indicators. The goal is to coordinate real-time information between the office, the site leader and the other workers there (whether or not they have smartphones). Out of years of experience in international development it has become clear to Doug Penner (Vookani founder) that the leaders in the field needed something far closer and more reliable than a computer to respond to donors about their day to day activity. So in 2012 he developed a prototype and took it to village leaders in Uganda. When it worked, it was fantastic. From wondering what they were doing with the money, suddenly you have the answer to your question, you can see a picture they took seconds ago, and the GPS shows exactly where they are on Google Maps. Unfortunately, they just werent ready for smartphones quite yet.
